Joseph Miller

JOSEPH MILLER, PhD

Serial Founder and Scientist

(formerly Manager, Technology & Intelligence at Bridgewater)

JOSEPH MILLER, PhD

Overview:
Dr. Joseph Miller is a seasoned entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience and currently serves as the Founder & Chief Investment Officer of Battery Causal Intelligence, LLC, an FX hedge fund. His academic qualifications include BA degrees in physics and economics from U.C. Berkeley, a master’s in applied physics, a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Cornell University, and an executive MBA with a concentration in Asset Management from Yale University.

Professional Experience:
Before establishing Battery, Dr. Miller was the Manager of Technology and Intelligence for Management Systemization at Bridgewater Associates, collaborating closely with Ray Dalio, Eileen Murray, and famed AI scientist, David Ferrucci. His work involved developing AI/ML systems that emulate senior management's decision-making processes. Concurrently, he co-founded Vivun, the first AI platform for
integrating sales and product teams in tech companies and holds the role of Chief AI Officer. Dr. Miller has founded multiple startups, including marketing company PearPop and web3 social identity platform Quivr, creating various patented AI technologies. His scholarly contributions span across fields as varied as nuclear fusion, microscopy, game theory, and medical devices for neurosurgical applications. This diverse subject expertise has provided him a distinctive approach to understanding complex systems and has led to a novel perspective in AI, knowledge representation, and causal inference.

Battery Causal Intelligence Thesis:
While the price movements of assets might seem random from minute to minute, the decisions made by buyers and sellers are not arbitrary. Due to the principle of computational irreducibility, a limited set of transaction rules followed by market participants can mimic random price actions. Building or maintaining a comprehensive model of all possible indicators and logic used by market participants to predict these rules at any moment is unfeasible.
However, over the past 20 years, data and analytical methods once considered advanced and exclusive
have become widely accessible. This shift, along with the growing popularity of deterministic quantitative
methods, has led to a more defined set of potential decision-making rules for investors. Battery uses
proprietary techniques based on causal inference to create models that approximate the true, collective
decision-making rules of the market. This approach facilitates a novel and effective strategy for generating
alpha.

Academic Contributions:
At Berkeley, Dr. Miller was awarded the Segre Physics Fellowship for developing a new nuclear imaging
technique for national security and the QB3 Fellowship for inventing a unique microscope for quantifying
physical forces in live cells. His doctoral work included theories on cancer cell thermodynamics and pulse
plasma nuclear fusion, with support from ARPA-e (DOE). He also invented high-energy chip-scale particle
accelerators, receiving funding from DARPA and holding multiple patents in AI algorithms and medical
devices.

Community Involvement & Personal Life:
Dr. Miller is an active board member of Appian Water, a non-profit dedicated to providing sustainable water access to remote communities in the world. He resides in New Hope, Pennsylvania with his wife and two sons.
